First Birthday Party!

On Sunday we celebrated Ava's first birthday with a party for family and friends. Her birthday is not officially until the 15th, but because of Marc's schedule, it was the only day that worked and that didn't interfere with Easter or Alix's birthday. We had a lot of fun, and got to see friends that we hadn't been able to get together with as often as we would like to! It was also nice to see all the kids playing 'together'! It will definitely be interesting as they get older!

Ava received beautiful gifts, and enjoyed her birthday cake to the fullest extent a one-year can! Sam kept exclaiming that he couldn't believe she ate the whole cupcake! She didn't eat the whole thing (lots of crumbs ended up on her seat and some on the floor!) but she did make a significant dent in it! She also styled her hair with the icing a la Cameron Diaz in There's Something About Mary! It was very cute! Of course the family photographer (tante Joelle) took most of the pictures, so they will be posted once they are ready!

I had two very precious moments during the day. One occured before the party started as Sam was helping me clean up in the dining room. He asked if Oma (my mom) had ever met Ava. I told him that she hadn't. He then asked if she knew we were pregnant. I said no again. He said, "That's too bad. At least if Oma could have seen her for the first year." Tears started springing to my eyes, but luckily we were so busy I had no time to shed them. I'm thankful that my mom got to enjoy grandsons, and that she had two of the very best grandsons in the world.

The second moment was as everyone was singing 'happy birthday' to Ava. I thought back to the extremely early mornings and the even later nights, the days on end of little to no sleep, struggling through breast feeding and naps, all the millions of times when I had no idea what I was doing...and suddenly all that didn't matter because here we were, all safe and happy, celebrating one of Ava's first milestones together as a family. I almost cried again, but luckily I kept it together!

All in all, Ava's first party was a success, and I'm looking forward to celebrating scores more of birthdays with her and our (ever-growing) family!

Leave it to Sam, in his own precious way, to think about someone most of us probably forgot in the excitement of the day. I am sure Oma knows about dear Ava and is watching over her from her place in Heaven.

The party was fun, Angel, and I agree, all those worries, struggles, and sleepless nights fade away in the wonder of celebrating a truly beautiful one-year-old!
